Parallelization for Quick Delivery of Ball of Work

The aim of "Parallelization" is not only to simultaneous processing.

Hi, there!

In the articles of “What is the Worth which Parallelization of Workflow Brings?” and “Parallelization of Workflow Cuts Lead Time to One Fifth“, I have introduced that “workflow parallelization” is one of business improvement methods.

In this article, I will lastly introduce just another example of business improvement by “Workflow parallelization”.

Business improvement comic

There is a comic on business improvement called “TAKEO’s Adventure in BPM” made by Questetra. It’s a story that a young employee, Takeo, has been trying to improve the business flow and raised the company’s performance.

As I often distribute this comic at seminars and exhibitions, it is quite popular.

TAKEO's Business Flow Improvement Story

In the story, among business improvements that TAKEO promotes with “visualization” of work from order acceptance to delivery, an improvement case by “parallelization” of Workflow is described.

Workflow improvement by “Parallelization”

Even though an example of business improvement by “Parallelization” is introduced in “TAKEO’s Adventure in BPM”, it is not aiming to process concurrently on multiple Steps by parallelizing, but to advance the timing to start the Step.

In the flow from order reception to delivery, delays were frequently occurring in the “Produce” Step of person in charge of production. In the flow from order reception to delivery, delays were frequently occurring in the “Produce” Step of person in charge of production, and the cause was that he could not cope with the busy season. Therefore, in order to make it flatten the work in the “Produce” Step as much as possible, he devised a way to deliver the Issue (ball of work) as soon as possible to the “Production” Step.

Upon completion of the Step of “Order receive”, the Issue has been delivered only to “Order entry” until then, but he changed it to be delivered to “Order entry” and “Produce” at the same time. As a result, the “Produce” Step became possible be processed without waiting for the “Order entry” Step to be finished.

◇◇

I have introduced in several articles that “Workflow parallelization” is one of business improvement methods. I will be happy if it would be a hint for those who read this article to improve their work.

That’s it, for today!
